A Quick Day Trip to Tigoni – Driving to Gathoni Farm, Sensory Garden Kenya, Naishola Gardens, and a Lakeside Picnic at Naiposha Gardens

After weeks of city chaos, work deadlines, and long to-do lists that somehow never end, we finally carved out a quiet moment for ourselves. And where did we escape to? Tigoni. Just a short drive from Nairobi, but a world away from its noise and busyness. There’s something deeply therapeutic about getting out of the city on a weekday.

We haven’t joined all the group trips to most of these hidden green gems just yet—but let’s call this blog a soft launch of our future nature escapades. Whether you're looking for a peaceful day trip, a couple’s picnic spot, or a quiet sensory healing experience, the Tigoni-Limuru area is quickly becoming the ultimate nature-lover’s secret. The landscape starts to shift almost immediately once you leave Nairobi’s concrete jungle. You trade grey smoke for green, exhaust fumes for unpolluted air, and the constant honking for birdsong and breeze.

Even if you’ve done this route before, it never gets old. Our small 4WD handled the winding roads like a champ—rolling past rolling tea farms, quiet villages, and misty forest corners that feel straight out of a movie. It’s one of those drives that makes you want to roll down the windows and simply breathe. We left early, chasing that mid-morning golden light

This particular adventure to Gathoni Farm, home to Sensory Garden Kenya, Naishola Gardens, and the lakeside charm of Naiposha Gardens, proved to be an absolute gem and has been on our “must-visit” list for a while now. It was more than just a drive; it was a sensory feast and a much-needed mental reset. Sometimes, all you need is a single day, a full tank (well, maybe half), and a little nudge from the midweek blues to escape into nature.

First Stop at Noni’s Art Gallery – Tea and Stories Begin

We arrived at Noni’s Art Gallery. Though still in curation at the time of our visit, the gallery space offered a lovely welcome with walls that whispered of creativity in progress, but the heart was already there. We were welcomed with a tea-tasting session paired with digestive biscuits, the different flavors warming us from the inside out.

There’s something grounding about starting a day with a cup of tea—especially when you know you’re about to walk the very fields it came from. We sampled locally grown teas, including bold blacks and herbal infusions, while taking in the creative energy that flowed through the gallery space. It's one of those rare places where tea and art meet as a gentle introduction to the day's theme – a celebration of the senses.

The Farm Tour – Picking Tea Leaves and Uncovering History

Next, we went on a guided farm tour across Gathoni Farm’s gentle green slopes, learned to pluck the “two leaves and a bud”, and gained a deep appreciation for the hands that make our morning rituals possible, and got to pick some tea leaves with our own hands, trying to be as fast as the professional tea pickers. We failed miserably! Understandably so, though, haha!

Incredibly insightful, we listened as our guide spoke of the history of tea farming in Kenya, how the terrain and weather of Tigoni give its leaves their distinct flavor and strength. There was a knowing in her voice—and rightfully so.

We learned the fascinating history of tea cultivation in the region, understood the intricate process of tea picking (it's harder than it looks!), and gained a newfound appreciation for that comforting cup we enjoy every morning. The vibrant green leaves stretched as far as the eye could see, a testament to nature's abundance and standing on that farm, we didn’t just see tea. We felt it.

Sensory Garden Kenya – A Healing Space

After the tea farm, we headed to the truly refreshing Sensory Garden. This was a highlight! As we strolled through the meticulously designed pathways, our senses were immediately engaged. The air was thick with the fragrant notes of various herbs and flowers. We spent time inhaling the invigorating scents of rosemary, the calming aroma of lavender, and the spicy hint of lemongrass. We crushed basil, rubbed rosemary between our fingers, tasted edible flowers, and our guide shared fascinating facts about each plant, their uses, and their history.

We even got to collect some of our preferred fresh plants to create personalized "scent bags" to take home as a beautiful, tangible memory of the garden as we were guided through rows of aromatic herbs, healing plants, and edible flowers that made you feel like you’d wandered into a secret apothecary. Amazing how much joy a handful of fragrant leaves and flowers can bring. It was a meditative experience, truly allowing us to slow down and connect with nature on a deeper level.

They often host group tours for mindful walks, learning sessions, or immersive sensory experiences. We’re so stoked we were able to go.

Naishola Gardens – Where Nature Meets Art

Just close to the Sensory Garden is Naishola Gardens, a truly picturesque space. We enjoyed a leisurely stroll through its manicured lawns and vibrant flowerbeds. It was clear that Naishola is an ideal spot for picnics and events – the setting is simply stunning, offering both open spaces and secluded nooks perfect for relaxation or celebration. What sets it apart is its beautiful blend of wild and cultivated spaces that make it perfect for photo shoots, intimate events, or solo reflection.

The lawns are soft, the flowers bursting in color, and the entire place is framed by rolling green hills that Tigoni is famous for.

While we didn't picnic there on this occasion, we certainly made a mental note of it as a fantastic spot for future celebrations or simply a relaxed afternoon with friends. We could easily imagine a laid-back wedding here, or a quiet birthday celebration, or just reading under a tree with a thermos of tea. It’s picturesque in that unforced way—where you don’t need filters because the light is already perfect. We’re especially curious about their group events and weekend pop-ups that blend music, food, and nature. If you’re looking for a garden escape that feels grounded, artistic, and inclusive—Naishola might be it.

We wrapped up the farm visit experience with another wonderful tea tasting, this time at the gallery lounge. It was a chance to revisit our favorite blends and even discover new ones, solidifying our appreciation for the art of tea.

And, of course, we couldn't leave without acquiring some beautiful plants to add to our home collection for the memory of a small piece of Tigoni's tranquility to nurture in our own space, along with some freshly packed tea leaves to prolong the farm-fresh tea taste with every cup. It was a perfect way to take in (literally) everything we’d learned and experienced.

Final Stop at Naiposha Gardens – A Lakeside Picnic to Close the Day

The day wasn't over yet! We drove further down through the scenic tea farms, the green landscape stretching endlessly around us, until we arrived at the beautiful compound of the Naiposha Gardens. This spot, with its inviting lakeside setting, was the perfect finale to our sensory journey. Naiposha is another gem in the Tigoni area we’ve been eyeing. The name itself feels poetic—like a whisper of wind across still water, and sure as in different images online, it's a picturesque place perfect for picnics, photography, and peaceful connection with lush lawns, elegant flower gardens, and curated nature vibes set the mood for a slow afternoon of storytelling, food-sharing, and barefoot walking. It’s on our radar for a quiet Sunday trip—or even a mini celebration for a loved one's birthday.

We spread out our picnic blanket and enjoyed a peaceful meal by the water. Our picnic spread was delightful as it included refreshing cold infused drinking water, plain drinking water, delicious sandwiches, and some absolutely satisfying boba teas from Booba (no, they didn't pay for this mention, their products are just genuinely good, and we enjoy their shakes too!). We also packed some fresh fruits. And yes, a moment of "damn it!" when I realized I'd forgotten our fresh juice back home, but honestly, what we had was still more than sufficient to nourish us in that serene setting, soaking in the quiet beauty as the afternoon slowly faded into dusk. The calm ripple of the lake, the gentle breeze, and the sense of complete relaxation were exactly what we needed, making for a truly memorable lakeside meal.

While we saw others enjoying the boat rides and jet ski water activities, we decided to skip them this time around because we wanted to fully immerse ourselves in the calm, saving the splashes for another visit when we're dressed and ready for some lakeside fun!

As the afternoon turned to dusk, we enjoyed the evening capturing some beautiful photos and clips to remember that perfect day. As the last rays of sunlight dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery hues, we packed up, our hearts full and our minds refreshed.

What We Loved Most:

  • The balance of activity and rest – from walking & learning to lounging and sipping herbal teas.

  • The variety of scents, sights, and stories that made every stop unique.

  • That we didn’t need to drive far, plan months in advance, or spend a fortune.

  • And of course, being together on the road, on a random weekday, just soaking in joy.

Tips?

  • Start Early: Mornings are cooler and less crowded, and the air? Crispy fresh.

  • Pack Snacks or Pre-order Picnic Baskets: Some gardens offer them at a cost, but feel free to bring your own.

  • Dress for Comfort: Light layers, walking shoes, and maybe a hat for those sunny garden trails.

  • Book in Advance: Some spaces like Sensory Garden Kenya and Naiposha Gardens require prior booking, especially for group trips or curated experiences.

  • Bring a Journal or Sketchpad: Trust us—you’ll want to sit quietly, read, or and reflect.

  • Pack a picnic blanket, camera, and plant bag – trust us, you’ll need all three.

In the rush of work, traffic, and deadlines, we often forget that relaxation lives close to home and this trip reminded us that one good drive can change the tone of your whole week. That nature still heals. That shared tea and quiet lakesides are enough sometimes.

This quick day trip to Tigoni was more than just an outing; it was a reminder that adventure doesn't always have to be grand or far-flung. Sometimes, it's about embracing the beauty close to home, allowing your senses to lead the way, and finding joy in the simple, yet profound, act of discovery. We can't recommend it enough for anyone looking for a refreshing escape!

Whether you’re a couple looking to reconnect, a solo explorer in need of fresh air, or someone planning to join a group day trip to Tigoni, consider this your sign. Go. Even if it’s just for a day. You’ll return lighter, fuller, and maybe even with a potted plant or two to remember it by.
