Caught Some Trout on Our Safari and Fishing Trip up the Aberdare Ranges Mountain

Hear us out—we know ours is called Ride or Drive Life, but this time, we decided to let someone else take the wheel. It was a "sit-and-be-driven" adventure from our cozy home, to the picturesque Aberdare Cottages and Fishing Lodge in Murang’a for a two-night getaway. This trip took us on a journey of discovery—a splendid blend of fly fishing, a game drive, birdwatching, picnic by the river, and soaking in nature's serenity. From catching trout to spotting wildlife in the heart of the Aberdare National Park, it was a trip that refreshed our souls and strengthened our bond as a couple.

Setting Off to Aberdare Cottages and Fishing Lodge

The drive to Murang’a was smooth and scenic, with lush greenery and rolling hills that made us feel like we were leaving the chaos of city life far behind. As we approached Aberdare Cottages and Fishing Lodge, we were greeted by the familiar charm of the lodge’s rustic architecture nestled against the backdrop of the Aberdare Ranges. The cool mountain breeze and the sound of birds welcomed us, and we immediately felt at home.

The lodge is a haven for couples seeking a romantic getaway with a touch of adventure. The warm hospitality, cozy cottages, and the calming sight of the Mathioya River flowing gently a few metres from the property set the perfect tone for the days ahead.

A Date with Trout Fishing

Fishing isn’t something we do often, but as soon as we heard about the trout fishing experience at the river, we knew we had to try it. The lodge provided us with all the equipment we needed, and after a quick tutorial, we were off to the Chania River. Standing by the water, surrounded by towering trees and the symphony of nature, we felt like we were in a scene from a movie.

With patience, laughter, and a bit of beginner’s luck, we caught a couple of trout. The moment was pure joy—watching the shimmering fish in our hands felt like a small victory. Later that evening, the lodge prepared our catch for dinner, serving it fresh and perfectly cooked. Sharing that meal by the fireplace, under the soft glow of lanterns, was a moment we’ll cherish forever.

Exploring Aberdare National Park: Safari Stories

The next day, we set off early for a safari inside Aberdare National Park. The park is a short drive from the lodge, and as we entered, it felt like stepping into another world. The lush bamboo forests, mist-covered valleys, and cascading waterfalls were simply breathtaking.

We kicked off our adventure with a game drive through the lush, misty expanse of Aberdare National Park. The park, located just a few hours' drive from Nairobi, is a hidden gem that’s often overlooked in favor of the more famous Masai Mara or Amboseli. But trust us, the Aberdares are something special.

Driving through the park felt like stepping into a nature lover’s dream. The cool mountain air, the dense forests shrouded in mist, and the occasional break in the clouds revealing sweeping views of the valleys below—it was breathtaking. Along the way, we encountered a diverse array of wildlife: elephants lumbering through the forest, graceful antelopes grazing in the meadows, and even a rare glimpse of the elusive bongo, a shy antelope species that calls the Aberdares home.

The roads were rugged but navigable, adding a dash of adventure to our game drive. Whether you’re driving yourself or opting for a guided tour, this journey is worth every bump and turn. The wildlife sightings are just the beginning; the sheer beauty of the landscape will leave you speechless.

During the game drive, we spotted some of the park’s iconic wildlife—herds of elephants leisurely crossing the trails, buffalo grazing in the distance, and a majestic male lion resting under a tree. But the highlight was the elusive bongo antelope, a rare sight that left us both in awe. Our guide shared fascinating stories about the park’s wildlife and history, deepening our appreciation for this pristine wilderness.

We stopped at Karuru Falls for a picnic, where the sight of the three-tiered waterfall cascading into the depths below took our breath away. The moment was surreal—a perfect blend of adventure and romance, with nature as our witness.

The Aberdares is also steeped in history. Did you know that this region was a key hideout during Kenya’s fight for independence? Being inside the park, we couldn’t help but feel a deep respect for the resilience and courage of those who once sought refuge here.

After a full day of exploring, we returned to Aberdare Cottages, tired but content. The warmth of the lodge felt like a comforting embrace after the chilly mountain weather. We spent the evening recounting the day’s adventures over a hearty meal, with the crackling fireplace adding to the cozy ambiance. Later, we stargazed sitting at our room balcony, wrapped in blankets, as the night sky lit up with countless stars. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with so much beauty and adventure.

Heading back home with hearts full of memories the following morning, we reluctantly packed our bags and said goodbye to the lodge. As we were dropped back home, the memories of our time at Aberdare Cottages and inside the park replayed in our minds. It wasn’t just the sights and experiences that made this trip special—it was the connection we felt with nature, with each other, and with the warm-hearted people we met along the way.

This trip was a reminder of why we love exploring Kenya. It’s a country rich in beauty, adventure, and experiences that nourish the soul. Whether you’re catching trout, spotting wildlife, or simply enjoying a quiet moment by the river, the Aberdare Ranges have a way of leaving an imprint on your heart.

Tips for Planning Your Aberdare Adventure

If you’re thinking of taking your own safari and fishing trip to the Aberdares, here are a few tips to help you make the most of it:

  1. Pack for All Weather - The Aberdare Ranges are known for their unpredictable weather, so bring layers, rain gear, and sturdy shoes.
  2. Book a Guide - If it’s your first time, hiring a local guide can enhance your experience by helping you navigate the park and find the best fishing spots. We highly recommend booking a stay at the rustic Aberdare Cottages and Fishing Lodge in Murang'a's Mathioya village and getting guides from them. They will show you the best spots and share a wealth of knowledge.
  3. Bring Your Fishing Gear - If you’re into fly fishing, please bring your own equipment. Alternatively, some lodges and tour operators offer fishing gear for rent.
  4. Plan Ahead - Accommodation within the park can fill up quickly, so book your lodge or campsite in advance.
  5. Respect the Wildlife - Remember that you’re a visitor in the animals’ home. Keep a safe distance, and don’t leave any litter behind.

Every journey leaves its mark, but this one will always hold a special place in our hearts. The Aberdare Ranges gave us more than just an adventure; it gave us memories we’ll treasure forever.
